's -- there's value in that. we begin with breaking news and what the fbi was doing last night at paula broadwell's home. she is the woman who had the affair with general petraeus. details on that in a moment. also tonight, keeping them honest on the new twist and turns in the petraeus sex scandal. his affair with broadwell led him to resigning as cia director. you know that already. now another four star general, john allen, is connected to the scandal. we will also look at who's who in this growing scandal. we will map out the key players and connect some of the dots. first, the big question tonight is who authorized the investigation which led to petraeus' stepping down and why? we know his extramarital affair was discovered when this woman, jill kelley, complained about anonymous and what might be considered mildly harassing e-mails. new tonight, a source tells cnn that kelley first mentioned the e-mails in a casual conversation with an fbi agent in may whom she knew. a casual conversation. the source tells us the fbi agent said, let me check it out. the fbi has been on the case sin
petraeus, the general had an affair with his biographer paula broadwell that came to light after the fbi began investigating harassing e-mails sent to jill kelley, a socialite in tampa. the fbi found out it was broadwell sending those e-mails. according to the washington post, the e-mail described kelly as a -- i don't know why they do this. as a seductress. accused her of having a relationship with petraeus. for more on where things stand we're joined by chief white house correspondent -- mike isikoff, and of course we've got david corn, who's on the show now from mother jones. let me talk about this, first of all. i think it was interesting of the president to give almost a complete snow white description of this guy. he referred to the affair, which is the reason he's being removed from office, as a single side note. i mean, bill clinton went through -- he was keel hauled. >> yeah, yeah. >> this guy get a single side note. >> just a pesky asterisk. but, you know, politicians and presidents for years in washington have been using david petraeus as cover. if you can get underneath -- >>
there, including folks from the state department, the fbi, everybody there was asked do you know who made these changes? and nobody knew. the only entity that reviewed the talking points that was not there was the white house. so that -- you know, i don't know whether -- what they said yesterday is exactly right or not, but what i do know is that every member of the intelligence community said that references to al-qaeda were removed by somebody and they don't know who. and references to attacks versus demonstrations were removed by somebody. >> let me ask you a question. will your committee, call on excuse son rice to ask her to testify? >> i don't know the answer to that right now. we will talk about that. we have two more hearings scheduled. >> do you think she will be called? >> she's going to have to come in and of it at some point. whether it's in a closed hearing or open hearing. we will have an open hearing too but at some point she needs to come in and say what the president or the white house directed her to say. >> senator leiberman, dianne feinstein, the democratic chair
between the two apparently happened after bro broadwell admitted to the fbi that she and petraeus had an affair. we get our "1st look" at the fbi agent who actually started the investigation that led to the cia director's resignation. this is frederick w. humphreys ii, a personal friend of jill kelley. lawmakers have to wait another day before hearing general petraeus's testimony on benghazi. there were questions of whether the former cia director would take part in the house intelligence committee. instead he will appear behind closed doors with both intelligence committees tomorrow where leaders will zero in on all of the information they have been wanting to get from him. let me bring in nbc news capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell. she's standing by. kelly, there's a new report out today that in the last few days of his tenure with the cia that general petraeus really wanted a time line of events and some other information released, perhaps clarify the cia and the information it had. >> well, they've been trying to piece together information, and petraeus was part of trying
before the house intelligence committee. and it really begs the question of what did the fbi know and when did they know it? how long did they sit on that information? i recall that general petraeus briefed the senate about what happened in benghazi. did he have this looming over his head? what is the realtiming here, liz? that's the real question that i think going forward is so imperative that we get to the bottom of. >> now, as for more on that timing, thursday is the closed door senate hearings on benghazi. petraeus was set to testify. needless to say now he is not. top director acting head of the cia. many are saying he still has to testify here, including ambassador bolted ton through the our network said this is -- there is no way around it that he has to testify. >> you would think he would. >> if they ask him to, even though he is an ordinary citizen now, he would still be required to. >> goes back to that thing about, you just can't have affairs. you know because of the blackmail issue. >> i disagree. you can have an affair. you can't put them on email, all right, people
it. >> if i'm running the fbi. if i'm running the cia and i want access to them because i have to get the investigation to find out when the next attack is coming and what happened with the last attack, i would be raising hell to try to get somebody on the highest level to help me out. why is the phish and maybe -- is the fbi and maybe -- can't get access. call all the senators, feinstein as well as graham get me access. john brennan get me access. >> steve: the administration doesn't want -- like lindsey graham just said they are trying to run out the clock until the election. >> brian: i don't understand why the fbi isn't more outraged. >> gretchen: maybe that's part of the reason why we are seeing drip, drip. somebody is behind the leaks. here is retired admiral james lions. he says courage was lacking in benghazi. he has written an op. ed about it here is a snippet from that according to his article. having been in a number of similar situations i know you have to have the courage to do what's right and take immediate action. obviously that courage was lacking for benghazi, the sa
to the compound to do reporting and they found in the compound stuff that our own f.b.i. didn't find. so at this point, i think that it was jake tapper of abc news wrote there is a drip, drip, drip about this. the administration set themselves up for this by blaming video in the first place. i actually am going to complain. i don't think romney brought this up enough. if he had, other reporters would have paid attention earlier. >> bob: it was smart. they found copy of "new yorker" magazine. >> dana: no, they found a letter from him. >> bob: they did? >> kimberly: you should be concerned. >> dana: dated september 11. >> bob: on the other hand i would like to see how many other consulates around the country and embassy asked for backup help. six weeks prior to the event, which nobody expected that ambassador would be in benghazi. >> dana: the letters are on september 11. >> bob: i am talking about the report with the e-mail to the state department. six weeks before, right? she said six weeks before. >> kimberly: yes. >> bob: no notion that ambassador would be there. >> kimberly: something
papers." "the new york times," the fbi agent who initiated the investigation that led to the discovery of cia director david petraeus's affair has been identified as frederick humphries. humphries began the investigation after jill kelley complained of harassing e-mails which later turned out to be paula broadwell, the biographer. humphries is a veteran agent who has helped investigate high-profile terror suspects like the so-called millennium bomber. >>> "washington post," nearly 50 million people in the united states are in poverty. up from last year, according to the census. a new formula shows more people relying on safety nets as higher costs of living and medical expenses sent poverty members upward. california, the district of columbia, arizona, florida and georgia top the list of places with the highest levels of poverty. >> from our parade of papers, "the cedar rapids gazette," fema may need to request a congressional bailout as flood claims from sandy quadruple capacity. it's a fema subsidiary and claims from sandy could top $12 billion. the program's essentially the country'
, national counterterrorism center and the fbi. all players in the room. a democratic aide tells cnn that seven out of nine democratic committee members attended the meeting and just three out of eight republicans showed up. so where was john mccain while his fellow committee members were being given details on benghazi? he was holding a press conference. complaining about the lack of details on benghazi. mccain's office says the senator missed the briefing due to a scheduling error. today, mccain was asked about his absence and the senator got a little testy. he says "i have no comment about my schedule and i'm not going to comment on how i spend my time to the media." hmm. and it got more contentious from there. >> i have no further comment. i have no further comment. how many times do i -- because i have the right as a senator, i have no comment. who the hell are you to tell me? >> joining me now is richard wolffe, msnbc political analyst, and vice president and executive editor of msnbc.com. he seems like he's on a mission just to discredit the president if he's not going to show

been no formal response. and within the last few minutes, greta van susteren has reported that the fbi is now on the ground in tunisia to question the only known suspect in custody and significantly this comes after the intervention of republican senator lindsey graham who wrote tot tunisian government requesting questioning why there was a lack of access to the suspect. jenna: senator graham spoke to jon yesterday and mentioned his frustration with that. interesting to watch that side of the story. >> reporter: one point on that. this really begs the question if a senator could intervene with the tunisian government six weeks after the attack and at least a week after the suspect was in custody, why was it that apparently the white house or the justice department didn't take the same course of action? jenna: sounds like a good question. jon will be discussing this a little bit now. great reporting as always, catherine. thank you. >> reporter: you're welcome. jon: these brand new revelations could bring more political fallout just four-days before the election. let's bring in jonah gol
